During this procedure, the dentist will numb the area and scrape out the decayed part of the tooth. The dentist will then mold a filling to the shape of the hole in the tooth. This keeps the tooth strong and prevents more bacteria from entering the tooth.

In cases of deep decay, the patient may need a root canal. This procedure is necessary when the inside of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes deeply decayed or otherwise damaged. The dentist will remove the damaged pulp. The dentist will then fill the tooth with a strong material.
