Common Services Provided in a General Dentist Office

general dentist Alpharetta, GA

A general dentist can provide a range of dentistry services for individuals. These services range from cleanings to exams to treatment of dental problems. For example, a general dentist may fill cavities and perform root canals. Understanding more about the services a general dentist performs can help you prepare for your next visit to the dentist.

General cleaning

During the cleaning, the dentist or hygienist will scrape the teeth with metal tools to remove plaque if necessary. Then an electric toothbrush will be used to thoroughly brush each tooth. The patient will be able to rinse out their mouth with water before the dentist or hygienist flosses the teeth. If necessary, the hygienist may scrape away more plaque from between the teeth.

Dental exams

During a dental exam, a general dentist will check the teeth for any cavities or excess plaque. This exam happens after the dentist or oral hygienist has cleaned the teeth. The goal of this exam is to catch any dental problems, such as small cavities, before they become bigger problems.

The dentist will also check the patient’s oral health and cleaning habits. For example, gums that bleed during flossing may be infected with gum disease. If necessary, the dentist may recommend a different oral hygiene routine. For example, the dentist may recommend that the patient floss more often or use a certain type of mouthwash. The dentist may also recommend certain tools to help the individual better clean the teeth.

A dentist may take X-rays of a patient’s mouth to check for cavities that cannot yet be seen during a basic exam. The patient will bite down on a piece of plastic, and a scanner outside the patient’s mouth will take a picture of the mouth. The dentist may take an X-ray on either side of the mouth. The dentist may also take a full-mouth X-ray every few years.

Treatment of dental problems

While proper oral hygiene is important, individuals can still get cavities and other oral problems. The most common treatment for a cavity is a filling. During this procedure, the dentist will numb the area and scrape out the decayed part of the tooth. The dentist will then mold a filling to the shape of the hole in the tooth. This keeps the tooth strong and prevents more bacteria from entering the tooth.

In cases of deep decay, the patient may need a root canal. This procedure is necessary when the inside of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes deeply decayed or otherwise damaged. The dentist will remove the damaged pulp. The dentist will then fill the tooth with a strong material.
